Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
