Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights celebrations throughout the city during the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.
“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to host the matches and oversee the fan activities beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
The international federation holds operational control of stadiums on matchdays. While it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of flags being seized.
The region hosts one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” organizers concluded.
