Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
