Wessels will be unavailable for South Africa's upcoming test matches.
South Africa front-rower Jan-Hendrik Wessels has been suspended of nine matches for touching Josh Murphy's genitals during the Blue Bulls' URC win over Connacht.
The incident happened in the early stages of the Bulls' 28-27 win against Connacht on Friday, with opposing player Murphy being shown a temporary dismissal after responding aggressively by striking Wessels on the head area.
After the Connacht player reported the incident to referee Mike Adamson, the contact was checked by the TMO, who determined insufficient clear footage.
Wessels stayed on the pitch until he was replaced in the later stages of the game.
Although the URC announced that Murphy's temporary sending-off was rescinded by a disciplinary panel, the Springbok was found to have violated law 9.27, which specifies:
"Any athlete must not do anything that is contrary to the spirit of good sportsmanship. This includes touching, twisting or compressing the genitals."
The panel concluded that the event met the level for dismissal and justified a three-month ban, the minimum suspension under World Rugby regulations for such an offence.
Nonetheless, the player's suspension was reduced by three weeks because of his cooperative behavior prior to and at the hearing and his good record.
Wessels and the Bulls have the right to appeal, but currently, the ban will rule the young player out of the Springboks' fall internationals against the Brave Blossoms, Les Bleus, the Azzurri and Ireland.
Wessels will also miss the Bulls' URC games against Glasgow, the Emirates Lions and the Cell C Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup games with Bègles and Northampton.
Wessels has won ten international appearances for the Springboks and was included in their Rugby Championship-winning team during the recent tournament.
The Connacht player, in contrast, is available to play against Munster in Saturday's inter-provincial derby after being cleared.
