England have opted for a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.
But the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
