Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United only seven months following leading derogatory chants targeting the team's coach, Wilder.
This experienced forward, a free agent after departing from Leeds, has put pen to paper on a contract joining the second-tier club in difficulty until January. Bamford's seven-year spell with Leeds concluded amicably in August.
One of the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player was to lead offensive chants regarding Wilder during the club’s promotion celebrations in April. Currently, the one-cap England international will feature for Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to rescue the team he loves out of the bottom places.
Both men had history before Leeds earned promotion back to the Premier League the previous campaign and United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder described the forward as a "muppet" when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and the Blades secured automatic promotion while Leeds United missed out in the playoffs.
All appears to have been resolved with United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement up front and Bamford looking to rejuvenate his playing days.
The Wilder chant gained traction this spring. A repentant Patrick and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Chris Wilder said at the time: “Spoke with Pat recently and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I'm uncertain about the words used from a fellow pro! But I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We had a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke as well and we had a half-hour chat together and he is a super guy, a class act. Back in my playing days we would give it and accept it and that is an integral part of football across all levels, including a Sunday morning. I've got no problem at all. I am cool with it and I told him that to Pat.”
The forward featured in 18 games for Leeds last season however the ex- Forest, Chelsea & Middlesbrough striker has struggled with fitness issues in recent years.
