A member of the Air National Guard is on the mend after he was gravely wounded in an ambush-style shooting last month in the US capital.
The family of Andrew Wolfe, 24, report "the injury to his head is slowly healing and that he's starting to 'look more like himself,'" said West Virginia Governor the governor.
The family expects the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the next two to three weeks, and they feel hopeful about his recovery, said the governor.
Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of a pair of state guardsmen injured by gunfire when a shooter opened fire not far from the presidential residence on November 26th. His fellow guardsmember, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, died from her injuries.
"Our request remains for all state residents and Americans for their prayers!" Morrisey declared.
The governor was present at a vigil on Friday evening for the injured soldier at a local secondary school in his hometown, where the guardsman was once a student.
A pastor at the vigil shared a message from the soldier's parents, Jason and Melody Wolfe.
"It is clear to us that there is a long road to go," they expressed, as reported by regional media outlets.
"However our faith keeps us hopeful. We remain grateful for the prayers and the encouragement from people all over the globe."
Previously, the governor said the serviceman had acknowledged medical staff with a positive gesture and was capable of wiggle his feet.
Police have formally accused the alleged gunman, an Afghan national named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Before coming to the United States in 2021, he was once a counterterrorism soldier in a CIA-backed unit that operated alongside American troops in Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of 2,000 National Guard members whom the former president dispatched to the Washington DC in August as part of his immigration and crime-related crackdown in urban centers.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Trump said he desired another 500 National Guard troops sent to the District of Columbia.
The former presidential office has also cited the attack as a justification for further restrictive policies.
They have cancelled all citizenship ceremonies for foreign nationals from a list of nations that were part of a travel ban implemented over the recent season, among them the suspect's home country.
