No fewer than 16 individuals have lost their lives after a massive fire erupted at a clothing factory in Bangladesh, with officials cautioning that the fatality count could increase.

16 bodies have been found but were charred impossible to identify, the fire department reported.

Grief-stricken relatives assembled outside the four-level factory in Mirpur, Dhaka on Tuesday in seeking their loved ones still not found.

The blaze, which started at the factory around midday, was brought under control after several hours. But an adjacent chemical warehouse remained ablaze, authorities said.

Up until 21:00 local time (15:00 GMT) yesterday, the fire at the chemical warehouse had not been fully extinguished, media reports reported.

Fire department authorities have not ascertained which of the two buildings caught fire first.

Per bystanders, the chemical warehouse contained bleaching powder, synthetic polymers and chemical peroxide, all of which can accelerate fires. Plastic also produces poisonous gases when ignited.

Security personnel are still searching for the operators of the factory and the warehouse, emergency services head the department director told reporters.

An probe on whether the warehouse was operating legally is also in progress, he noted.

Crying family members stood outside the burned buildings, many of them grasping photographs of their missing relatives.

Included in the crowd is a man searching desperately for his daughter, his loved one.

"When I learned of the fire, I hurried to the scene. But I still cannot locate her... I just want my daughter back," he stated to news media.

The catastrophic occurrence has another time highlighted the safety concerns affecting Bangladesh's garment industry, which engages millions of workers and is a significant source of foreign revenue for the country.
